What Not to Pack as a Camp Counsellor: 6 Packing Mistakes to Avoid

Starting to pack for your summer away working as a camp counsellor? As you gear up for those amazing 8-10 weeks, it's tempting to stuff your bags but some items are better left behind. But trust us, a little restraint goes a long way! Here are five common packing mistakes to avoid as you prepare for your summer adventure.

Large Electronics

Beyond the risks to the devices themselves, remember that camp is often a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from technology and engage with nature and the people around you. Bringing large electronics like laptops, iPads, etc, can easily distract from that experience. Save yourself the space in your suitcase.

Valuable Items

Jewellery, designer clothes, expensive watches, and other valuables don't belong at camp. Storage is often limited and not very secure, and the camp environment, with all the water activities, mud and sports, puts these expensive items at a high risk of damage or getting lost. Home is the best place for them until you get back!

Hairdryer / Straighteners / Curlers

Think twice about packing hairdryers, straighteners, or curlers for camp. Many camps will have restrictions on bringing these, depending on their rules and facilities. They take up valuable space and weight, and honestly, you'll likely be too busy to use them much anyway. Plus, wattage differences could cause issues. If they’re not explicitly allowed or you're unsure, it's probably best to embrace your natural hair for the summer. Trust us, your hair will dry in no time in the hot weather.

Where will your summer take you?

Lots of Clothes

Pack light, as you'll likely receive t-shirts as part of a uniform policy, so double-check with them before you overpack. Plus, you'll probably end up buying some fun tourist tees while you're there anyway. Make sure to bring clothes you don't mind getting messy or even ruined, it's pretty much guaranteed at camp. The good news is that there are laundry facilities available, so you can wash and rewear your clothes.

Toiletries

Instead of packing bulky toiletries, just bring mini-sized ones. You’ll be able to buy larger toiletries at Walmart or Shoppers after you arrive, and they might be able to last you the whole summer. This will save you valuable packing space and ensure you'll have exactly what you need for the entire summer.

Prohibited Items and Substances

This might seem obvious, but don't arrive with forbidden items, even if they are legal in Canada. Camp policies exist for good reasons, focusing on safety and creating an appropriate environment for campers. Alcohol, drugs, smoking, vapes, or weapons of any kind can not only get you immediately fired but can also pose serious safety risks to the entire camp community. Carefully review your camp's prohibited items list before packing or arriving at camp. Being under the influence of any substance while you're at camp or during your working hours is also strictly forbidden and carries the same serious consequences.

Remember that camp is about simplifying life and connecting with nature and people. The less you bring, the less you have to worry about, and the more you can immerse yourself in the wonderful world of camp!
