How to Incorporate Pride into Your Daily Life at Camp

It’s June, and that means two things: Summer Camp Season begins and Pride Month kicks off! To celebrate both, we’re sharing fun and meaningful ways you can bring Pride into your life at camp. It’s a great opportunity to show allyship and express your support for the LGBTQIA+ community. As a role model for your campers, why not make your actions count and celebrate Pride in style? Here are some ideas to help you shine.

Be an Ally 🫶

The most important way to celebrate Pride at camp is to be an ally to both campers and fellow staff. You can show allyship by making a pledge with your cabin, practising active listening, and ensuring every voice is heard. Take the time to ask open-ended questions and respond with empathy. Building trust makes campers feel safe, valued, and supported.

Wear Pride Colours 🏳️‍🌈

Show your support with what you wear! Wear a rainbow shirt or clothing featuring LGBTQIA+ flags. Don’t have one? No problem! Create your own with tie-dye, make multicoloured friendship bracelets, or get creative with face paint. One of our favourite DIYs is a melted bead flag you can attach to your staff lanyard or backpack!

Normalise Pronouns ☺️

Using pronouns (like she/her, he/him, they/them) helps create an inclusive space. Some campers or staff may prefer specific pronouns; being the only one doing so can feel isolating. When everyone shares their pronouns through badges, stickers, or introductions, it becomes the norm rather than the exception. It's a small action with a big impact.

Encourage Theme Days 🙌

Campers love a good theme day, so why not have one for Pride? Try hosting a Rainbow Day, Flag Day, or even a Colour Parade to celebrate LGBTQ+ diversity vibrantly and joyfully. These events are not only fun but also spark great conversations about inclusivity.

Host Pride-Centred Activities 🎨

Campers thrive on creativity, especially when it involves making something meaningful. Organise a Flag-Making Workshop to explore the history and meaning behind different Pride flags. Another great idea: an Ally Pledge Wall, a space where campers and staff commit to respecting pronouns and diversity using colourful handprints or paper cutouts to represent the camp community.

These are just a few simple yet powerful ways to celebrate Pride at camp. But the best way? Be yourself. Embrace your uniqueness and uplift others for theirs, whether it’s about identity, background, or experiences. When you celebrate diversity, you inspire your campers to do the same.
